Zombie Nerf War
Zombie Nerf War was originally conceived by Dustin Neighly. It’s a game of either survival & killing zombies, or shambling & eating brains, depending on your team.
There are two teams: zombies and hunters. The zombies should outnumber the hunters by around 4:1. Games should be rotated in such a way that the hunters change every game, and everyone has the chance to play a hunter at least once. Hunters should be prepared to do a lot of running; asthma medication is advised for those who suffer. Zombies should be prepared to do a lot of shuffling; alcohol is advised for those who are still sober.
When?
Saturday, June 17th

Baltimore, exact location TBA

What do I need?
All equipment will be provided. We use NERF Mavericks for guns, and have ammo pouches and lots of ammo. We’ll also supply makeup to a certain degree, and maybe even cheap beer. If you have something you’d specifically like to wear or drink, bring it.
Hunters
- Hunters wear an armband to indicate their membership of the living class
- Hunters have guns, 2 hits on a zombie puts it down for 45 seconds, at which point another zombie can tag it back in
- If a zombie touches you, you are dead
- After your first death, you must return to your starting location and wait 2 minutes
- After your second death, you become a zombie
- Hunters only have 6 shots to start, but can pick up shots from killed zombies
- Zombies may carry ammo packs or extra guns, and must give it up if killed
- Hunters win if all zombies are down and there are none left to tag them back in
Zombies
- Zombies are not allowed to run; they are not required to moan and scream “BRAAAIIINNNNSS,” but it’s highly encouraged
- Zombies kill hunters by touch, two kills turns the hunter into a zombie
- If you’re shot twice, you must crouch or kneel to indicate incapacitation, and count to 45
- Upon reaching 45 seconds, raise your hand and any other zombie may tag you back in
- Zombies start with extra guns and ammo to distribute amongst themselves
- If killed, a zombie must give up their gun or ammo to the hunter
- Zombies win when all hunters are turned into zombies
The House
The ideal location for this game is an old house, surrounded by a small clearing. The hunters would start in the house, and have barricades in the form of cardboard and duct tape or staple guns. Doors could not be locked, but could be closed and barricaded using the approved materials. Any positions which would put the hunter in a situation where destruction or extreme force would be required to enter would be illegal. Nowhere is safe, you can run but you can’t hide.
The George
If more complicated scenarios are used, or if there are a large number of players, one person should be designated George. George is not a player and cannot win, but is responsible for making sure that everyone follows the rules, and playing certains roles regarding victory conditions and special events (if such scenarios are used).
The Drops
There will one or more locations where ammunition and items can be found. If a George is being used, he will place these. Otherwise, it can be decided that the zombies will place them, or have it predetermined by everyone. These drops could be visibly marked and placed outside, or hidden in the house.
The Items
- Med Kit: This an extra hunter armband that may be given to any incapacitated zombie to turn it into a hunter
- Crowbar: This is a close range weapon, you may kill a zombie by striking them with it in the head; if the zombie manages to touch you as well and it’s not extremely obvious to both parties which one was first, you are both dead

[…] I’m planning a second ZOMBIE NERF WAR this June in West Virginia. It would be great to get some Baltimore folks down there as well, particularly anyone who played in the first ZNW a couple months ago. We’re coming up with some rules changes and game variants, and hoping to score a better location. I liked the way the fortress game played out, and I think an actual house and surrounding area would make a great setting. […]

[…] Zombie Nerf War II Report We just got back last night from Zombie Nerf War last night, and I declare it a success! We had a bit of trouble getting started, as usual. Since we switched it to Sunday, a number of people were too hung over to play, or showed up late. We ended up having 9 players instead of the 20 we had hoped for, so we had to scale things back a bit. Instead of playing in the farm that Hess had arranged, we just went to his house, where there was some pretty interesting terrain. […]

[…] This morning, I somehow just found out about the Baltimore Zombie Walk. I had tentatively planned ZNWIII for this weekend, so it looks like I’ll be doing it on Sunday. We’ll meet up to play at 11AM somewhere, probably Wyman Park in Hampden. That will give us plenty of time for several games, and a break to go eat somewhere, before we head downtown around 6:30PM. […]
