Very interesting to hear, although I'm a bit disappointed at the implication that we won't see much overlap. Personally, the single biggest thing I'd like to see in The Sims 3 is full integration with SimCity 5. But you're probably right, in that being a young white male video game enthusiast, I'm in the minority of Sims players.

What's absolutely good to hear is that they're not considering further product placement, for precisely the reasons you specify. Doesn't EA have a racing game, where the car company wouldn't allow them to render scratches or dents when it wrecks?

FYI, Will Wright hasn't had anything to do with The Sims since the first one; The Sims 2 and The Sims 3 are not his babies like Spore is. (I happen to work on Sims 3 so I know what I'm talking about.) They don't even call us Maxis anymore (though I still get mail at maxis.com and we still have a conference room called "Reticulating Splines".)

Spore is about alien evolution, cultural interaction, war, the psychopathic torture of alien creatures, and space exploration. The Sims is about human individuals, human stories, consumerism, interpersonal human social interaction, the psychopathic torture of simulated humans, and fantasy homebuilding. Besides how totally different Spore and The Sims are from a content style, game dynamic, and animation quality point of view, another thing to remember is how The Sims' target audience doesn't have a whole lot of overlap with SimCity or Spore or any other video game; our players (and even our modders) are 60% female and 50% non-American.

The Sims' doesn't involve itself in franchising or product placement because it breaks the game so badly -- a brief flirtation with McDonald's in The Sims Online taught them how unwilling users were to believe Mickey-Ds satisfied hunger better than home cooked meals. Relatively pricing objects, getting them dirty, having them break -- all impossible with licensed content, or so I'm told. Think IKEA would be happy if their beds cost less, broke more often, and satisfied sleep less than a Serta Perfect Sleeper? Yeah.

I absolutely cannot discuss our user-created content plan for Sims 3, but I promise you none of us are asleep at the wheel here.
