The Book of Racism (Is Long And Boring)
Maybe I’m just a little upset because somebody’s talking shit about one of my idols, but apparently some people are calling Stephin Merritt racist because he doesn’t like modern rap. It’s a little confusing though, because he does like older stuff (like Run DMC), and he doesn’t like modern white pop either, and he specifically mentions much of his dislike of said hip-hop is because it perpetuates racist stereotypes.
I’m obviously not a racist, because I have some Thelonious Monk and Sun Ra in with my TMBG and, well, Magnetic Fields. But how can I find out how much of my music is made by Jews? I wouldn’t want to accidentally be anti-Semitic. I’d better hop on over to Jews Rock and make sure. I don’t think I have much music by the elderly, either; or children! Damnit, I’d better go pick up some Barney sing-a-longs and … um … whatever old people sing.
