Spray-On Solar-Power Cells Are True Breakthrough

Rob Carlson and I got into a discussion the other day about the practicality of having illuminated street signs at night. I said it’s something that we’ll see in the next 5-10 years because of the increasing practicality of solar power for low-energy applications. He disagreed.

Thanks to a recent breakthrough in Spray-On Solar-Power Cells, it looks like I win.

I disagree with the article, though. I don’t think we’ll ever see these things build into our clothing. It’s too geeky (and a PITA to wash) for mainstream adoption. I’d like to see more devices work like the good old solar calculator. You simply coat the entire device in the stuff and make sure you sit it on your desk or window sill instead of your pocket.

Combine that with induction plate recharging stations and you’ve got the impression of wireless power without the tesla coils.
