Victimless Leather
I have no idea how I feel about this victimless leather jacket prototype from Tissue Culture. Technically, it’s meat. It’s made from a combination of mouse and human tissues, then grown in a test tube (not stitched, actually grown to shape). Is it vegan? I’d say no, because of the mouse tissue used to start it, but what all of the tissue was voluntarily donated by a person (the human tissue used came from its creator)? And why wouldn’t I support something that’s a new alternative to leather through slaughter? If it was cheaper and caught on, maybe it could replace the leather industry.
Either way, the truly interesting thing about this is how people who have no problem with leather thing something like this is disgusting. It’s interesting, and a bit scary, that somebody can take no issue with killing and skinning a defenseless animal, but be repulsed by something grown in a beaker.
Me, I think I’ll wait until they can make them out of soy.
