Okay, this is an invention. I’ll have some marketing droids do the branding, but for now I’ll call it “The Programmer Buddy.” It is a problem solving robot. It will be a small plastic robot that sits on your desk and looks cool, like something out of anime. Maybe there could be different “personalities” like Bender, hot girl, giant mecha, etc.
Now, whenever the programmer is stuck and can’t figure his problem out, he turns on the Programmer Buddy, and it say something like “Please state the nature of the problem.” The programmer then explains the problem, and the PB says something like “I’m not following, can you explain that last part again?” The programmer goes into greater detail, and the PB says something like “Okay, I think I see, so how exactly is it behaving now, and how exactly do you expect it to behave?”
By this point, in 90% of cases the programmer will have figured out the problem himself just by having to explain it out loud. After a certain number of promptings, the PB will have to conclude that the problem is unsolvable, to keep the programmer from catching on. Once he realizes the thing doesn’t actually do anything, the magic will of course be gone, as he won’t bother to explain anything to it again, and will fall back to the standard behavior of thinking he knows everything just from the thoughts bouncing around in his head.
